VietNamNet Bridge – Thanks to the U.S. Open Gold Grand Prix championship, Vietnam’s top badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh jumped two spots on the latest ranking of the World Badminton Federation, which was released on July 15.
Tien Minh holds the trophy besides Wong Wing Ki at the award ceremony.
A day after the U.S. Open Gold Grand Prix finished, the World Badminton Federation (BWF) updated its rankings, in which Tien Minh is the only player in the Top 10 with a mutation of achievement.
The bonus points from the U.S. Open Gold Grand Prix championship helped Minh overcome Tommy Sugiarto and Jan O.Jorgensen to rise to No. 7 in the world with 55166 points.
This ranking can bring advantages for Tien Minh if he is chosen as one of the top eight seeds in the draw of the world championship, which will be held on July 22. At least his position will not be challenged until the end of the world championship, which is scheduled from August 5-8 because the world’s strongest players will not participate in other tournaments to prepare for the biggest tournament of the year.
The trophy from America not only brings about $9,000 of cash prize and the 7th position in the world to Tien Minh, it also marked Minh’s return after a hard time.
Last March, Minh dropped out of the world top 10 and it took him six months to get back to the leading group.
Earlier this year, Tien Minh played not very well at the tournaments of the super series system, but he tried to win the championship at the Vietnam Open and now the trophy of the U.S. Open Cup. This is the biggest achievement of Tien Minh so far this year.
