Built in 2011 with Japanese official development assistance funding, the tollbooths were meant to collect fees for repairing and maintaining the tunnel. They were only used during a one-month trial, and were abandoned after the Road Maintenance Fund was introduced in 2013, clogging the road leading to Thu Thiem tunnel.
