Blair told Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in Hanoi on July 23 that he was impressed with Vietnam’s socio-economic development achievements, especially in realising millennium development goals (MDGs), including one on poverty reduction.

He expressed his confidence in Vietnam’s long-term development prospects, while hailing the country’s international integration policy and its economic reform to create a sound investment environment for domestic and foreign businesses.

Welcoming Blair’s visit, Dung said relations between Vietnam and the UK are developing well, but are yet to match their potential.

Vietnam wants to work closely with the UK to develop their strategic partnership in a deep and substantial manner, spanning politics-diplomacy, economics, trade, investment, education-training, and people-to-people exchange, he said.

PM Dung proposed that the UK continue supporting Vietnam in poverty reduction, socio-economic infrastructure development, and climate change adaptation.

During his visit to Vietnam, Tony Blair is due to meet with Minister of Planning and Investment Bui Quang Vinh.

He will also attend and deliver a speech at a workshop on global investment trends and recommendations for Vietnam.
