Vietnam’s ICT sector experienced rapid advancements in 2024, highlighted by the transition from 2G to 4G and significant developments in 5G commercialization and digital infrastructure.
The ICT Press Club, comprising nearly 50 journalists from over 40 media agencies across Vietnam, announced the 10 most notable ICT events of the year on December 26, 2024.
The transition from 2G to 4G was voted the most significant achievement of the year. Alongside this announcement, the club hosted a discussion on “5G Commercialization and Applications in Smart Industries.”
During the forum, Nguyen Viet Phu, President of the ICT Press Club, emphasized the transformative potential of 5G.
“5G technology, combined with smart manufacturing, is reshaping industries and opening a new era known as Industry 4.0. Startups are leveraging 5G to enhance connectivity, improve efficiency, and unlock unprecedented possibilities,” he said.
The fusion of 5G and AI-driven automation is seen as a game-changer for industries. Effective adoption of these technologies can boost operational efficiency, increase productivity, reduce costs, and enhance global competitiveness.
5G also plays a pivotal role in advancing sectors such as manufacturing, smart factories, seaports, and the industrial Internet of Things (IoT). By officially launching nationwide 5G services, Vietnam is positioned to catch up with global trends in industrial production, logistics, mining, and smart transportation.
The Vietnamese government has issued several key policies to foster 5G infrastructure, recognizing it as a cornerstone of national digital transformation. The Ministry of Information and Communications has outlined Vietnam’s digital infrastructure strategy, prioritizing high-speed broadband and nationwide 5G coverage.
Viettel led the charge with its 5G launch on October 15, 2024, operating over 6,500 base stations that cover all 63 provinces and cities, as well as key industrial zones, airports, and educational institutions.
By December 2024, VNPT followed suit with its official 5G commercialization, introducing tailored solutions such as private 5G networks, network slicing, and Open RAN 5G integration.
Meanwhile, MobiFone is preparing for its 5G launch in 2025, further contributing to Vietnam's digital transformation journey.
