Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick.

The film continues the story first introduced in Top Gun, following Pete “Maverick” - portrayed by Tom Cruise - a legendary US Navy test pilot who, after more than 30 years of service, still refuses promotion in order to remain in the skies where he truly belongs.

Maverick is later assigned to train a group of elite Top Gun graduates for a high-risk mission targeting a heavily fortified enemy weapons facility. Among the trainees is Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, played by Miles Teller, the son of Maverick’s late best friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw - a loss that continues to haunt him.

Decades after his early days, Maverick finds himself back where he began - but now as a seasoned pilot shaped by experience and loss. The mission forces him to confront his deepest fears, including the possibility of losing the very pilots he has trained.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the film became a global box office phenomenon upon its release in 2022. It ranked among the top two highest-grossing films of the year and became the most successful title in the history of Paramount Pictures, as well as the highest-grossing project in Tom Cruise’s career, earning US$1.49 billion worldwide.

The film surpassed even Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which grossed US$791 million. At the 2023 Academy Awards, Top Gun: Maverick received six nominations, including Best Picture, and won Best Sound.

Forty years ago, Top Gun captivated audiences with its breathtaking aerial combat, camaraderie among pilots and emotional depth surrounding love and loss. Nearly four decades later, it remains one of the defining films of the 1980s and is among 25 films selected by the US Congress for preservation due to its cultural, historical and aesthetic significance.
