The host rival, with an Elo rating of 2703, the highest among all masters, was defeated by Xiu Deshun of China with an Elo of 2694 and ranked No 35.

Liem, on white pieces, lost his advantage to his carefully prepared rival after only 29 moves. It was the first win of the Chinese in four meets against Liem.

The No 1 met with his brother Le Quang Long in the second round late yesterday, May 6.

The 11th tournament for both men and women will conclude on May 14.
