Show promoters are blacklisting many traditional music singers, accusing them of being too picky and greedy.

Famous singers suspended from stage

According to a promoter in Hanoi, the payment for singers who sing traditional and revolutionary songs can be reasonable if the show is hosted by a government agency. However the prices soar if the show is hosted by private company or organisation. Long travel distances are also one of the main reasons for the high prices.

A good number of companies are willing to pay VND50-60 million to invite a famous singer.

"A few years ago, a singer would accept just VND5-7 million then suddenly a company invited them at VND20-30 million. From that point on, the lowest price was set at VND20 million." the promoter said.

C. P. N. an employee at an event agency said one of her company partners told her to "never invite famous singers again. They scowled throughout the celebration."

The incident started when an attendant went on stage and gave speech, and although the singer came in late, the attendant continued to talk. The singer, visibly frustrated threatened to leave if they have to wait for long.

N said the most easy-going singers now are Dang Duong, Lan Anh and Viet Hoan. "Not only do they create a pleasant atmosphere, but they also understand with the organisers' problems. Many singers won't sing any songs they haven’t been contracted for, but Dang Duong, Lan Anh and Viet Hoan often sing one than more song requested by guests."

The public are often critical of singers refusing to return and sing in their home town, or if they do, they're accused of asking too a high a price. Some don't even bother coming at all, despite their promises.
