VietNamNet Bridge – Prolonged rain in Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Binh Thuan provinces have caused at least six deaths and flooded thousands of hectares of crops.
Floods in the central region claimed four more lives in Binh Thuan and Nghe An in the last two days.

A 17-year-old schoolgirl in Binh Thuan was swept away by floodwaters while on the way to school on Sunday morning. Rescuers found her body that evening.

In Nghe An Province, on Sunday, a 40-year-old mother and her 12-year-old daughter in Con Cuong District were swept away while crossing a stream and their bodies were found Sunday. A 42-year-old man in Nghia Dan District had been reported missing until his body was found Sunday evening.

A few days ago two people were killed in Lam Dong Province in the Central Highlands.

The floods have caused severe damage to infrastructure, houses, and crops in many provinces.

In Thanh Hoa province, nearly 1,000 houses were submerged, many families had to evacuate in an emergency. By early September 13, tens of thousands of hectares of rice were heavily flooded.

Around 6,500 hectares can be a dead loss and over 6,000 other hectares will reduce productivity. A vast area of fish and shrimp ponds and lakes were inundated, hundreds of meters of dikes were blown off. The total lost is estimated at around $1.83 million.

Local authorities said that if rain does not stop, Thanh Hoa will have a bad crop and face a rice shortage.

In Nghe An, the rising Ca River caused a landslide Sunday, blocking a section of National Highway 7A. Traffic was halted for a day until it was cleared yesterday afternoon.

The situation is not better than in Thanh Hoa. Total lost was estimated at nearly VND370 billion (around $1.8 million), mainly in the two districts of Con Cuong and Tuong Duong.

In Binh Thuan, they had hundreds of hectares of crops submerged, local authorities said.
Yesterday they salvaged a fishing boat that sank in the sea Sunday and cleaned the oil leaking from its oil tank.

In Lam Dong, 10 bridges have collapsed, around 500 houses have been damaged, and thousands hectares of crops have submerged. The total damages are estimated at VND10 billion (US$480,000).
