According to local resident Nguyen Thanh Vuong, the sighting occurred at around 9 a.m. on May 15 while he was taking visitors on a sightseeing trip near the waters of Phuoc Dong fishing village.
Vuong said he noticed the whales repeatedly surfacing to hunt for fish and quickly used his phone to capture the moment.
“The larger whale was about 10 meters long, while the smaller one measured around 6 to 7 meters. Both were black. They kept surfacing and diving to catch prey while seabirds circled overhead looking for food,” he said.
The appearance of the whales close to shore quickly drew attention from both residents and visitors, many of whom recorded videos and photos of the scene.
Local authorities noted that this was not the first whale sighting in the area. In July 2024, another pair of whales was recorded feeding in waters near Cu Lao Mai Nha.
Following the latest sighting, authorities advised residents and tourists to maintain a safe distance from marine wildlife and avoid approaching the animals too closely in order to protect their natural feeding behavior and ensure safety at sea.
The waters around Cu Lao Mai Nha, a small island known for its untouched scenery and fishing communities, have increasingly become a destination for eco-tourism and marine wildlife experiences.
