VietNamNet Bridge – As many as 7,024 traffic accidents occurred across Vietnam in the first eight months of this year, killing 6,128 people and injuring 5,102 others.

In August alone, there were 859 traffic accidents, causing 755 fatalities and 612 injuries, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee report released on September 6.
The number of accidents, fatalities and injuries fell by 223, 171, and 237, respectively, compared to August 2011, the report said.
Also in August, more than 619,400 people were fined a total of VND188 billion (US$9 million) for violating traffic rules. 35,027 driving licenses were withdrawn while 2,678 cars and 54,126 motorcycles were seized.
In an effort to reduce road accidents, the National Traffic Safety Committee, in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Training, the World Health Organization, and the World Peace Foundation will hold numerous events to raise awareness of the need to wear helmets and the risk of using alcohol while driving.
