The two officials were Vo Van Tu, 50, and Ho Van Thiet, 35. Both were working for the Traffic Management Department 11.3 under the Viet Nam Road Administration.

On August 24, Tu and Thiet pulled over two container trucks driving on the road in Ky Anh Township for a regular check and found that the trucks were carrying excessive amounts of cargo and driving on a road not permitting that capacity. The truck drivers failed to show the required papers.

The two officials gave a fine of about VND75 million (US$3,375) for the violations.

The two later were caught receiving VND5 million (US$225) from a representative of the transport company to ignore the violations.

Cause of fire killing six family members revealed

Police in the southernmost Ca Mau Province have announced the official conclusion on the cause of a fire that killed six people from one family, including two children, after midnight of July 31.

The cause of the fire, police said, was the engine of a motorbike that was parked at the base of the staircase. A short circuit in the battery wires caused molten copper to form, which can quickly cause a fire if coming into contact with flammable objects.

At around 12.15am on July 31, a blaze ripped through a house in Ca Mau Town while the family members were asleep. Six people, including two children, were killed. Only one woman, who was sleeping in a room on the ground floor, survived.

Police had investigated the house and said that four factors could be the cause of the fire, including an electricity fault, two motorbikes, two ashtrays and a bundle of incense.
