A witness told vietnamplus.vn that a motorbike travelling along Highway 10 from Ninh Binh Province to Nam Dinh Province was hit by a train while crossing the railway at about 3.30pm.

Witnesses said the motorbike driver swerved sharply across the tracks in Yen Bang Commune as a train travelling from Hanoi to HCM City was steaming through.

The elderly couple on the motorbike, both over 80, were flung more than 10 metres and died instantly.

Huong said that visibility on both sides of the crossing was clear but drivers still needed to be watchful.

The railway section runs parallel to Highway 10 through Y Yen District, which is considered a "black spot" for traffic accidents.

Local authorities said it was because there were many market stalls set up by local residents near the train line.
