A tropical depression packing gusts of up to 75 km/h was located just 70 km south of Bach Long Vi Island this afternoon, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

At 1 p.m. on August 18, the storm’s center was positioned southeast of Bach Long Vi, with winds of 39-61 km/h, gusting up to 75 km/h. It was moving northwest at about 15 km/h.

Within 12 hours, the tropical depression is expected to maintain its strength and course. By 1 a.m. on August 19, it is forecast to be near the coast of Quang Ninh - Hai Phong, with winds of 39-45 km/h and gusts up to 65 km/h. It will then move inland over Quang Ninh - Lang Son provinces, continuing north-northwest before weakening into a low-pressure zone over Guangxi, China.

Strong winds of 39-61 km/h, gusting up to 75 km/h, are expected over the Gulf of Tonkin, including Bach Long Vi, Cat Hai, Co To, and Van Don, with waves up to 3.5 meters. Coastal areas of Quang Ninh and Hai Phong may see winds of 39 km/h and gusts up to 65 km/h from this afternoon.

From August 18 to 19, heavy rains of 50-150 mm are forecast for the northeast and Thanh Hoa, with localized totals exceeding 300 mm. Nghe An is expected to receive 20-40 mm, with isolated areas exceeding 80 mm. The northwest, central coast from Ha Tinh to Da Nang, and parts of the Central Highlands will see scattered thunderstorms and localized heavy rain.

Forecasters warn of possible flash floods in small rivers and streams, landslides on steep slopes, and urban flooding in low-lying and industrial areas. Severe thunderstorms with tornadoes, hail, and lightning are also possible. Rainfall is expected to ease after August 20.
