VietNamNet Bridge – The toll that trucks of over 18 tons and container trucks of over 40 feet (group 5), have to pay for running on HCM City’s Trung Luong expressway will be cut by 25-30 percent. The current toll is VND320,000 ($16).

The Ministry of Finance has agreed with the Ministry of Transport’s proposal to reduce tolls on this kind of truck by 25-30 percent, and to not set up a toll station on National Highway 1A to collect toll from trucks that avoid running on HCM City-Trung Luong expressway.

The Finance Ministry has submitted the proposal to the Prime Minister for approval. Accordingly, trucks of over 18 tons and container trucks of over 40 feet will have to pay toll of VND448,000-VND480,000 ($22-24)/trip instead of VND640,000 ($32)/trip.

Mr. Thai Van Chung, Secretary of HCM City Transportation Association, said that transport companies were satisfied with the reduction. However, it is better to slash the toll for all trucks, not only trucks of group 5.

“Our association will consider and to give more suggestions in the coming time,” Chung said.

In mid-April, at the petition of the HCM City Transport Association to cut down the toll, the Ministry of Transport asked the Finance Ministry to slash the toll by 25-30 percent for trucks of group 5.

On May 28, the HCM City Department of Transport also petitioned the HCM City authorities to ask the Ministry of Transport to reduce toll on HCM City-Trung Luong expressway in order to lessen pressure on National Highway 1A and to effectively use the expressway.

According to the HCM City Department of Transport, since toll was collected on the expressway, the number of vehicles running on National Highway 1A rose by nearly 10,000 cars a day. This was also the reason for many serious accidents on this road.

Starting from February 25, the Cuu Long Corporation began collecting toll from all cars running on HCM City-Trung Luong expressway, the first road for cars only in Vietnam. The toll is from VND1,000 to VND8,000/km.

The toll was complained by drivers and transport firms to be very high.

To evade the high toll, many trucks have turned to use the National Highway 1.
