A strong earthquake that jolted northeastern Japan Wednesday morning has prompting a tsunami warning, but the waves was unlikely to bring any devastation to China, said Chinese forecasting center.

The tsunami's intensity was comparatively low, said China's National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center in a statement.


Japan's monitoring information showed that the waves were only 54 cm in height.


The earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale jolted the east coast of Japan's main Honshu island at 10:45 a.m. Beijing

Time Wednesday, according to the China Earthquake Network Center.


The epicenter, with a depth of 10 km, was monitored at 38.5 degrees north latitude and 142.8 degrees east longitude, the center said in a statement posted on its website.


Japan's Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning.
