Tung managed the best overall time of 1:17.02secs, breaking the records of both the Asian Games (1:17.64secs) and Asian Para Games (1:20.44secs).

This is the second gold medal for Tung and fifth gold medal of the Vietnam sports delegation at this year’s event.

It also marks a triumph for the swimming star as he came second in the qualifying round for the Para Games 2018, following previous record breaker Muhammad Nur Syaiful from Malaysia.

In the previous men’s 50m butterfly stroke, Tung won silver with a best overall time of 39.40secs. A day earlier, the 33-year-old from the central province of An Giang won gold in the men’s 50m backstroke.

“I’m really happy with my achievements so far. This is the first time I have managed such a good performance in the 100m freestyle. I would like to give my deep gratitude to viewers who have given encouragement to me and members of the Vietnam delegation,” said Tung.

At the same event 4 years ago, he contributed 5 out of 9 gold medals to the national team.
