VietNamNet Bridge – Police in the southern province of Dong Nai yesterday, Oct 9, arrested Phan Van Thuan Anh and Huynh Van Cu for illegally hunting langurs in Cat Tien National Park.

The two suspects, from Tan Phu District, will be prosecuted following an initial investigation that showed the pair used a hand-made gun for hunting the rare animals. They are alleged to have shot a 2.7kg langur and sold it for cooking.

While the type of langur has not been identified, two rare species in the area have been listed in Viet Nam's Red Book of rare and protected species – a brown-legged one (Pygathrix Nemaeus) and a black-legged (Pygathrix nigripes).

* Poland helps with green issues

Issues relating to waste and sewage management, energy saving and renewable sources of energy in Viet Nam were high on the agenda at the Poland-Viet Nam Environmental Protection Forum that opened in Ha Noi on Monday.

At the forum, participants discussed how to use the 2005 environment law to minimise the negative impacts of socio-economic development on the environment.

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment Bui Cach Tuyen said Viet Nam was striving to build a green economy by using environmentally friendly and energy saving technologies.

The forum also provided an excellent opportunity for Polish businesses to invest in this field in Viet Nam, said Tuyen.

Poland's visiting Deputy Minister of Environment Beata Jaczewska said that Poland was eager to share its experience in this field with Viet Nam and willing to share its cutting-edge technologies for environmental protection.

Some of these tackle problems such as waste management and treatment, dealing with toxic waste, industrial and daily sewage systems, recycling sources of energy and energy saving devices.

More Polish businesses have sought Vietnamese partners to share green technologies with. The first joint venture between them was established this year.

* Further investigations over wild bull death

Cat Tien District authorities are working with police in the investigation of the death of a wild bull in Cat Tien National Park in the central highland of Lam Dong Province.

Nguyen Van Dien, director of the park, said the forest management board had blockaded the park and seized the bull's bowels in Phuoc Cat 2 Commune after being informed of its death.

Police arrested two people, known only as Ngoc and Phong, for allegedly shooting the 360-kg bull as it searched for food near the commune's cultivated areas last Friday.

The police also seized the bull's head. Its meat was sold for VND100,000 per kilo. It's head and bile fetched VND3 million (US$144).
