Chairman of the district people’s committee, Ho Quang Buu, confirmed to the Viet Nam News that the quakes did not damage any public or residential buildings in the area.
Buu said the quakes occurred in Tra Ma Commune, near the Song Tranh 2 Hydropower plant.
“The first quake, which happened around 11am, caused buildings to shake. Another tremor later was lighter. It is the strongest quake recorded in the area,” Buu said.
“No damage to houses or public buildings in the district has been reported. However, we have prepared rescue teams to respond to any situation,” he said.
According to the latest report from the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre under the Institute of Geophysics, the two tremors in the area had a seismic focus at a depth of 10km, and the centre has been tracking the quakes.
The district is 90km from the province’s Tam Ky City and 50km from Song Tranh 2 hydropower plant.
The neighbouring Bac Tra My District, 40km from Nam Tra My, has been stricken by over 20 earthquakes and tremors since 2012.
The biggest quake, measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale, struck Bac Tra My District in 2012, and was the biggest quake in Quang Nam Province, causing superficial damage to over 100 houses.
