On August 17, local authorities in Tien Hai Commune confirmed the drowning incident, which occurred the day before.

At approximately 1:30 PM on August 16, L.T.T.V. (19) and P.T.T.V. (14), residents of Hoa Hung Commune, An Giang Province, went on a beach outing with their family in Hon Tre Hamlet, Tien Hai Commune. The group brought along an inflatable paddleboard (SUP).

After about 30 minutes of swimming, most of the group returned to shore, leaving four people still in the water. At that point, the two sisters climbed onto the SUP board while a 15-year-old boy pushed from behind, and another young man watched from the shore.

Shortly after, the boy lost his grip, causing the board to drift further out to sea. The sisters tried to swim back to shore, but were hit by a strong wave that overturned the board and threw them into the water.

The accompanying boy ran back to the beach to call for help. L.T.T.V. was pulled from the water in a state of cardiac and respiratory arrest. Her sister, P.T.T.V., was found by rescue teams about an hour later. Despite being rushed to a local medical station, both victims were pronounced dead.
