The two officials heard local officials and farmers tell how to grow and care for Dien – a well-known variety of pomelo, as well as local pomelo varieties in the village.

Hanoi currently has over 19,000ha of land under fruit cultivation, of which pomelo farming accounts for about 70%, approximately 10,000ha. There are 10 varieties of pomelos cultivated, in which the Dien pomelo, one of the most appreciated for its quality, is grown on about 8,000ha.

The two US officials sampled the Dien pomelo and said US consumers would be excited to use pomelo varieties like the Dien one in future.

Pomelos grown in southern Vietnam have entered the US market, and hopefully other varieties grown in the north will reach US consumers in the near future, said Taylor.

In November 2022, the first batch of green-skinned pomelos was exported to the US market, becoming the seventh fruit of Vietnam entering this demanding market, following mango, longan, litchi, dragon fruit, rambutan and breast milk.

Moffitt said that the US is ready to support planning and technology transfer so that good quality products from Vietnam can be brought into the US market.

The US desires to promote agricultural cooperation with Vietnam, making it easier for farm products to get access to each other’s market, she said.

According to experts, Vietnamese coconut and passion fruit are set to enter the US market in the near future, and negotiations are underway.
