Typhoon cancels Japan friendly

A friendly match between Viet Nam's national football team and J.League 2's Kyoto Sanga in Japan was cancelled on Monday as Typhoon Phanfone hit Japan.

The match will take place today.

Viet Nam lost their second friendly with J.League 1 team Vissel Kobe 5-1 over the weekend.

Can Tho to host international U21 tournament

Six teams will participate in the international U21 football tournament that will be organised in Can Tho City from October 19 to 28, 2014.

Two Vietnamese teams, namely national champions Song Lam Nghe An and Hoang Anh Gia Lai Arsenal JMG Academy, will compete with rival teams from Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Australia.

The teams have been divided into two groups, with Song Lam Nghe An playing Singapore in the opening match.

The tournament is an annual event organised by the Thanh Nien newspaper and the Vietnam Football Federation.

Last year, Vietnam won the trophy by beating Australia 4-1 in a penalty shootout.

Liem draws in eighth round

Vietnamese Grandmaster Le Quang Liem remains in 19th place in the Open category of the Millionaire Chess tournament that is taking place in Las Vegas.

The 2013 world blitz chess champion drew with Margvelashvili Giorgi of Georgia in the eighth round, and sits on five points.

The two-time Aeroflot Open champion will meet Matamoros Franco Carlos S of Ecuador in the last round.

So Wesley of the Philippines has the lead with six points, followed by Azarov Sergei of Bulgaria and Shankland Samuel L of the US.

The US$1 million event has drawn the participation of over 500 players from 43 countries around the world.

Dong claims yellow jersey

Le Van Dong of VTV Can Tho took the yellow jersey from Tang Tri Hung of Thanh Son Hoa Nong in the third stage of the Nam Ky Khoi Nghia cycling tournament yesterday.

Dong has the best time after three stages, followed by Huynh Mai Duy of HCM City and his teammate Nguyen Van Duc.

He also won the 156km Phan Thiet to Phan Rang-Thap Cham City stage with a top speed of 33.821kmh and a time of 4:36.45.

Today, the cyclists will compete in the 107km stage from Phan Rang-Thap Cham to Da Lat City.
