U17 Vietnam must bounce back after heartbreaking defeat to South Korea.

After two matches, U17 South Korea lead the group with four points, while U17 Vietnam and U17 Yemen both have three points. U17 UAE sit bottom with just one point.

A victory over U17 UAE in the final group-stage match would guarantee coach Cristiano Roland’s side a place in the quarter-finals and secure a historic ticket to the FIFA U17 World Cup 2026 without having to depend on results elsewhere.

U17 Vietnam could also progress with a draw, provided U17 Yemen fail to defeat South Korea. The scenario is considered realistic, especially after Vietnam drew with UAE one year ago and Yemen face a difficult challenge against the tournament favorites from South Korea.

Despite the painful 1-4 defeat to South Korea in the previous round, Vietnam’s young squad remain in a strong position to continue their campaign.

For nearly 80 minutes against one of Asia’s strongest youth teams, U17 Vietnam played with discipline, composure and tactical organization. Sỹ Bách’s opening goal even put the team within touching distance of an early World Cup qualification spot.

However, physical exhaustion and lapses in concentration late in the match caused the defensive system to collapse under relentless South Korean pressure in the closing minutes.

Coach Cristiano Roland admitted after the game that fitness was one of the key reasons behind the defeat, alongside the superior class of the opponents.

As a result, the Brazilian coach has made physical recovery the top priority ahead of the clash with UAE.

During training in Jeddah on May 11, players who started against South Korea mainly focused on light recovery sessions, while substitutes and those with limited playing time underwent additional fitness and tactical drills.

Beyond tactical preparations, Roland also spent considerable time working on the players’ mentality following the heartbreaking defeat.

The Brazilian coach praised his players’ fighting spirit and reminded them that football is often decided by the smallest details. He urged the squad to learn from their mistakes while staying mentally strong for the decisive challenge ahead.

According to Roland, the setbacks suffered at this stage could become valuable lessons for the team’s development as long as the players respond positively.

U17 Vietnam are expected to approach the match cautiously rather than engage in an exhausting high-pressing battle.

Instead, the team are likely to rely on defensive organization, quick counter-attacks and carefully managed energy levels while waiting for the right moments to strike.

With no option other than victory, U17 UAE are expected to push forward aggressively, potentially leaving spaces behind for Vietnam’s attackers to exploit.

Set-pieces and defensive concentration could also play a decisive role in the contest.

The Asian Football Confederation also highlighted concentration as the key factor for U17 Vietnam.

According to AFC, Vietnam must avoid repeating the costly mistakes made against South Korea if they want to overcome UAE and advance to the knockout stage.

For U17 Vietnam, the upcoming match is not only about qualification but also about proving their resilience after a painful setback.

Rather than relying on results from other matches, Cristiano Roland’s players know the clearest path to the World Cup is to take control of their own destiny on the pitch.
