U19 Vietnam to meet Laos in AFF Cup final round

Laos lost 1-2 to Myanmar on October 20 in the qualifying round of the 2014 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Nuti Food U19 Cup to rank second, and is scheduled to meet Vietnamese opponents in the final round.

With 9 points, Lao footballers will play the Philippines, Indonesia and host Vietnam in Group A, while Myanmar (10 points) will compete against Thailand, Malaysia and host Singapore in Group B.

The qualifying round took place in Laos with the participation of five teams – Cambodia, Brunei, East Timor, Myanmar and Laos to select two best squads for the final round.

Group B matches of the final round will be held in Singapore from November 22 to December 20, while Group B matches will be hosted by Vietnam during the same period of time.

Vietnam participates in World Taekwondo Champs 2014

The Vietnamese taekwondo team will participate in the World Taekwondo Championship 2014 in Mexico in late October.

The team including 29 martial artists will compete in 24 categories, targeting at least two gold medals.

This is the fifth time Vietnam has participated in such event.

Vietnam will host the next world championships in 2015.

Ben Tre is National A Division volleyball champion

Ben Tre beat Military Zone 4, 3-2, to win the championship in the men's category of the National A Division Volleyball Tournament at Vinh Long Gymnasium over the weekend.

Binh Duong placed third in the men's category even as Hoa Phat Hung Yen defeated Vinh Phuc, 3-1, to take the lead in the women's category.

The tournament's top four teams will compete in the National Volleyball Championships next year.

Duy wins in Nam Ky Khoi Nghia cycling tour

HCM City's Huynh Mai Huynh secured the yellow jersey of the Nam Ky Khoi Nghia cycling event which ended last Saturday.

Duy failed to make it to the top three of the final stage but maintained a commanding lead in the tour with a total time of 20:46.12 after seven stages. He was followed by Nguyen Van Duc of VTV Can Tho and Nguyen Minh Tam of Vinamit HCM City.

Meanwhile, Pham Phat Dat of the Vinh Thinh-Hoc Mon squad won in the 130km final stage from Dinh Quan District to Hoc Mon District with a time of 3hr 7.33min.

Ho Hoang Son of ADC-Vinh Long Television placed second and Le Quang Truc of TDC-Binh Duong placed third.

VTV Can Tho ranked first in the team event with a total time of 62:40.46. Thanh Son Hoa Nong placed second and Domesco Dong Thap came in third. Nguyen Thanh Tam of Gao Hat Ngoc Troi won the green jersey for being adjudged best cyclist while Le Ngoc Son of Domesco Dong Thap was adjudged King of the Mountain and Nguyen HuuTien of Dong Thap, best youth athlete.

"I am really happy since I can finally wear a yellow jersey after 16 editions of this tournament. My dream has finally come true, and it will be my last title before I retire by the end of this year," said Duy.

Tung signs with Quang Ninh Coal after earning ASEAN Cup spot

Defender Nguyen Minh Tung signed a three-year contract with Quang Ninh Coal after he was called to the national team which will compete at next month's ASEAN Football Federation Cup.

Tung's outstanding performance in three matches at the Asian Games last month made him a hot name in the domestic free market.

Previously, he became jobless after Vissai Ninh Binh withrew from the V-League tournament. His salary was not disclosed, but according to a reliable source, Tung received at least VND2 billion (US$95,200) for this move. 

Viet Nam wins bronze in Asian handball tournament

The Vietnamese women's team won the bronze medal at the Asian Beach Handball Championships in Hong Kong by defeating the host, 2-0, in the battle for third place last Saturday. The team will return home today. Meanwhile, Viet Nam will take part in the World Poomsae Championships to be held in Mexico from October 30 to November 2.

A 29-member squad under coach Truong Ngoc De will compete in 24 of 36 events in Aguascalientes City.

Viet Nam will be the next host of the tournament, the ninth championship, next November.

Minh and Trang in Paris for badminton contest

Top badminton players Nguyen Tien Minh and Vu Thi Trang will leave for Paris to take part in the Yonex Internationaux de France de Badminton on October 21 to 26.

The tournament, one of the Super Series events of the World Badminton Federation, offers a US$275,000 prize for the winners.

Minh, ranked 24th in the world, will play Marc Zwiebler of Germany, ranked 21st, in the first round match of the men's singles event. Minh has so far won all of their five previous duels. Trang, ranked 59th, will begin in the qualification round, where she faces Matilda Petersen of Sweden, ranked 97th, in the women's singles event.
