U22 Vietnam poised for SEA Games gold under new leadership

Analysts believe U22 Vietnam has a clear edge over regional rivals, including hosts Thailand and defending champions Indonesia, thanks to their solid roster and tournament experience.

That superiority was clearly demonstrated at the AFF U23 Championship last March, where U23 Vietnam displayed composure and consistency to secure the title for a third consecutive time.

If players like Khuat Van Khang, Dinh Bac, and their teammates maintain their form, focus, and finish better, U22 Vietnam has a strong chance of claiming the gold medal at the 33rd SEA Games without much struggle.

Is Kim Sang Sik thinking ahead?

However, the SEA Games is not the ultimate goal for coach Kim Sang Sik and his players. Shortly after, U23 Vietnam will compete in the AFC U23 Championship, where the objective is to advance beyond the group stage.

In theory, between now and the two major tournaments, Kim may aim to maintain a consistent lineup, similar to what he implemented during the AFF U23 Championship and the U23 Asian qualifiers.

Yet, considering the tougher competition and higher stakes of the AFC U23 Championship, the South Korean tactician is expected to take a more strategic and long-term approach - especially in terms of squad rotation.

Coach Kim Sang Sik must consider refreshing the squad ahead of the AFC U23 Championship.

This means testing different formations and introducing new players should not be limited to training camps or friendly matches. SEA Games 33 presents an official and ideal opportunity for Kim to begin reshaping the team.

While he must retain key pillars of the squad, Kim should also boldly experiment with emerging talents to help them adapt to his tactical system and gain valuable match experience - essential preparation for the AFC U23 Championship.

Given U22 Vietnam’s superior quality, experience, and composure, the SEA Games is not just about winning gold. It’s also a platform for Kim Sang Sik to implement sustainable changes and lay the groundwork for long-term success.
