Four days after U23 Vietnam’s emotionally charged victory over U23 Korea in the AFC U23 Championship 2026, both the team and their head coach Kim Sang Sik continue to stir public sentiment in South Korea.

The 2-2 draw after extra time - despite Vietnam being down to ten men from the 87th minute - culminated in a thrilling 7-6 penalty shootout win. But while the result itself was historic, the ripple effect of Vietnam’s performance is proving even more powerful.

South Korean media and fans have unleashed a wave of criticism towards their national team and head coach Lee Min Sung, calling the tournament performance one of the worst in the country's U23 history.

Lee came under fire not only for tactical shortcomings but also for his public response after the defeat. Upon returning to Incheon Airport, instead of protecting his players, the coach openly blamed goalkeeper Hwang Jae Yoon - who was already facing a storm of online abuse.

“He needs to focus on training. His behavior online is not befitting a professional,” Lee said in response to the player’s emotional social media posts.

This reaction sparked backlash, with many fans calling Lee “cowardly” and accusing him of deflecting blame. Critics urged him to reflect on his own failings rather than scapegoating his squad.

In stark contrast, coach Kim Sang Sik’s return to Vietnam drew widespread admiration.

When he arrived at Noi Bai Airport, Kim made no effort to seek media attention. Instead, he quietly wheeled his injured player, Hieu Minh, through the terminal - a moment that deeply moved Vietnamese fans and quickly went viral on social media.

Korean outlet Financial News commented on the stark contrast: “One coach scolded his players. The other pushed his in a wheelchair.”

Vietnamese and Korean press alike praised Kim for his humility and leadership, traits seen as central to U23 Vietnam’s unexpected triumph.

Throughout the tournament, Kim repeatedly credited his players, emphasizing that their effort, unity, and fighting spirit earned the bronze medal. Korean media noted how his gratitude stood in contrast to Lee’s deflection of responsibility.

U23 Vietnam’s win marked their first-ever victory over U23 Korea after 10 encounters - an outcome many say was foreshadowed by the teams’ divergent approaches.

With a heartfelt gesture and a fearless squad, Kim Sang Sik has not only made history, but also reminded Asia of what true leadership in football looks like.
