VietNamNet Bridge – One week after being trounced 4-1 by Myanmar in Indonesia, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and the coaching board of U23 Vietnam squad met on November 28 to analyze the failure.

Coach Falko Goetz.

Before this meeting, VFF’s representatives and German coach Falko Goetz’s Vietnamese assistants grouped up to express their viewpoints about expertise and Goetz’s playing tactics developed for the U23 team.

On November 28, VFF’s official met with Goetz to discuss Vietnam’s failure at SEA Games.

According to expert, Goetz made a mistake when he instructed player to change their forte playing tactic. Coach Goetz explained that during the drilling period, the coaching board guided players to practice their favorite tactic. However, because of time shortage, this tactic could not bring into full play so the coaching board made tactical changes.

The coach said that Vietnamese played very well at some matches. However, Vietnam lacked experienced players. U23 Vietnam had six players at the V-League but two of them were injured. Moreover, most of Vietnamese players are 21 years old, not 22-23 as many rivals.

Explaining why he arranged players to positions that are different from their usual positions, Goetz said that at FCs, foreign strikers are favored. As the U23 Vietnam lacked real strikers, the coaching board had to use players in different positions, which made difficulties to players but it was the best choice for the team.

The coach admitted the responsibility for the team’s failure but he did not mention his resignation.

He pointed out some measures to improve the team’s quality in the future, including: restricting the number of foreign players at FCs, creating opportunities for young players, each FC must have at least two players of less than 21 years old, national squads need to have chance to play with foreign teams, etc.
