The reform of the United Nations (UN) in the current world situation is urgent but it should benefit all member nations.

Vietnamese Ambassador Le Hoai Trung, Head of Vietnam’s UN mission was speaking at the 66th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on December 1. He said the reform of the UN, including its General Assembly, will help improve the operation and performance of its tasks as mentioned in its charter.

The diplomat said the reform of the General Assembly should raise its status as the main deliberative, policymaking and representative organ of the UN, increase its role in the process of standard-setting and the codification of international law as well as the promotion of UN senior officials.

The General Assembly should be a global platform for all UN member nations to discuss and decide common issues, especially those related to peace, security and development.

Therefore, he said, the reform of the General Assembly should be carried out through intergovernmental dialogue and commitments of UN member countries.In order to improve the operation of the General Assembly, it is also necessary to improve the efficiency of office work.

The Vietnamese ambassador urged the UN to reform the organization of other UN agencies such as the Security Council, the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG), and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Trung spoke highly of efforts by the working group in charge of in preparing document A/65/909 on the Revitalization of the work of the General Assembly. He proposed co-chairmen of the working group work as coordinator to settle disputes between member nations and hold separate meetings between groups of member nations to improve mutual understanding.

Vietnam called on UN members to work closely together for the success of this session.
