VietNamNet Bridge – Workers all have been looking for jobs in bewilderment, from unskilled workers to those with high education levels, from new university graduates to experienced.

University graduates stay redundant

Do Thi Phuong Thuy, 23, finished the University of Labor and Social Affairs one year ago, but she remains unemployed. Thuy applied for a lot of jobs, but she did not receive replies from employers. Now Thuy works as an assistant to the family-run street rice shop – the job which can be well fulfilled without the university degree.

Tran Vinh Linh, who finished the information technology faculty of the Hung Yen University of Technique Education, said he has been going to all the industrial zones in the Hai Duong province to look for jobs. However, Linh has not been invited for interviews so far.

“When I came to industrial zones, which I think are lacking workers, I was told that the enterprises in the zones have laid off workers to cut down expenses, and none of them intends to employ new workers,” he complained.

Not only new school graduates, but experienced workers also find it hard to get jobs. Nguyen Duc Tuan in Dong Da district in Hanoi, said that because of the disagreements with the company’s managers, he decided to resign from the post. He believed that with seven year experiences, he would be able to easily find a good job.

However, Tuan still has not found a job over the last three months. “I feel regret that I gave up the old job. I should have continued my job until I found a new one,” he said.

“I did not imagine before that it is so difficult to find a job,” he added.

Nguyen Thi Nhu Suong in Da Nang City complained that she still has not found a job, even though she has two university degrees. Suong has finished the Da Nang Foreign Language University and she also has a university degree in economics.

“The job market is Da Nang is always challenging because there are fewer companies than other cities. Meanwhile, the recruitment campaigns are not made public,” she said.

“I have been sponging on my husband and I feel ashamed of this. Since I cannot earn money, I dare not spend money on cosmetics or entertainment services,” she complained.

Foreign university graduates also unemployed

In the thoughts of Vietnamese people, the university degrees granted by foreign schools could be a guarantee that the degrees’ owners would find good jobs. However, this is not true in the current circumstances.

Nguyen Gia Khanh in Quang Ninh complained on Facebook that he has not found any job suitable to him. “I feel tired, discouraged and hungry,” he wrote.

Khanh has become the leader of a group of unemployed university graduates which gathers the members in the same situation, aiming to help each other find suitable jobs. Returning from Australia after finishing an economics college, but Khanh still has not found any job, even though his parents are senior executives of big corporations.

Bui Van Minh, who graduated from the California University, decided to return to Vietnam to work there after some years of working at a US software firm. However, Minh has not found his opportunities in the homeland. The knowledge Minh got from the university still cannot be useful in Vietnam.

As meeting too many difficulties in integrating into the business environment in Vietnam, Minh is thinking about returning to the US.
