VietNamNet Bridge – The fact that six proctors have been dismissed after they were discovered in helping students cheat at the finals has raised big worries among teachers. They fear that they may make the same mistake and get dismissed one day just because of carelessness.

The wrongdoing fighter at Doi Ngo School criticized by students

On June 29, 2012, or just several days before the university entrance exam is organized, the Ministry of Education and Training issued the new exam regulations which clarifies what things examinees can bring with themselves to the exam rooms.

In the past, students were prohibited to bring cameras or recorders to the exam rooms. However, the ministry has reconsidered the exam regulations after a student brought camera to the exam room and filmed the wrongdoings at the Doi Ngo High School.

In principle, the student violated the exam regulations and he must be punished for this. However, the society voiced its defense to the student, saying that he had to bring the camera with himself to film the wrongdoings which could be the proofs of the exam cheating behaviors.

Therefore, the ministry has decided to allow students to bring some kinds of cameras, video equipment and recorders to the exam rooms.

The new regulations have made students worried. Nguyen Xuan Tung, an examinee who attended the Mining and Geology University, said that examinees would have their thinking distracted, if someone is discovered as cheating at the exam.

“Proctors need to be sure that students do not bring prohibited hi-tech devices with themselves when they enter the exam rooms,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nguyen Van Phuc, who has a son attending the entrance exams to the Mining and Geology University, said that he himself would check the things his son brings with himself to the exam room, and that though examinees are allowed to bring some kinds of hi-tech devices, his son would only bring pens and some other essential things.

Not only students and their parents, but the lecturers who would work as proctors at the exam also feel worried because of the new regulations.

A proctor at the Hanoi University of Education said that the proctors who do not have knowledge about hi-tech devices, would not know what machines can be brought to the exam rooms, and what cannot.

“It would take time to verify the devices students bring into exam rooms. We may become casuists just because of our bad knowledge about hi-tech devices or carelessness,” he said.

Deputy Minister of Education and Training Bui Van Ga has informed that the proctors who violate the exam regulations would be heavily punished.

“The Ministry of Education and Training has vowed to fight against exam fraud. Violators would be heavily punished,” Ga stated.

Meanwhile, leaders of many universities have admitted that proctors do not have much time to be trained for the university entrance exams, because the new exam regulations were promulgated just five days before the exam.

Many of the examinees said that the proctors did not say about the new regulations that some kinds of recorders, cameras can be brought to the exam rooms. “We have been told that we can only bring pens, rulers, some kinds of calculators and white papers,” said Nguyen Van Toan, who attends the entrance exams to the Mining and Geology University.
