The Viet Nam National University-HCM City (VNU-HCM) will adopt the teaching method called Conceive, Design, Implement and Operate (CDIO) next year for an additional 15 majors offered at the school.

The CDIO framework of curricular planning and outcome-based assessment is being used at VNU-HCM's member universities to ensure training quality.

This year, VNU-HCM has used CDIO in 45 training majors, according to Associate Professor Dr Nguyen Hoi Nghia, deputy director of VNU-HCM.

Speaking at a workshop on CDIO yesterday in HCM City, Nghia said the CDIO would be eventually expanded to all majors offered at the university.

The curriculum includes design-and-build projects and demonstrates the interdisciplinary nature of engineering. Graduates can enter the workforce without retraining.

Nghia said that VNU-HCM had adopted the teaching method for engineering, IT, economics, and social science fields.

"With the teaching method, active learning is encouraged," he added.

Nguyen Thi Ngoc Ha, former student at HCM University's IT Faculty, which has used the CDIO since 2010, said that the method had helped her develop career skills and expand her knowledge.

She said the method emphasised creativity and self-learning.

Apart from VNU-HCM, CDIO is being used in many other Vietnamese universities.

The CDIO has been implemented in 116 schools worldwide. Its 12 guiding principles were developed in response to input from programme leaders, alumni and industry partners who wanted to know how they could recognise CDIO programmes and their graduates.
