It took Nguyen Ngoc Danh and Tran Thi Mo, the father and mother of the 2015 Asian Physics Olympiad gold medal winner, Nguyen Ngoc Khanh 12 hours to wait for their son at the Noi Bai Airport on May 12.

The flight delay by 9 hours caused some troubles, but they felt happy when seeing off the son who returned from the international competition as a hero.

“Calm”, “gentle” and “modest” were words Danh used when talking about their son.

It is a surprise to learn that Khanh, the gold medal winner, the excellent student who won high prizes at national, regional and international competitions, sometimes worried his parents.

Khanh began playing online games when he entered the sixth grade and became a game addict. He often sneaked out of the house to game shops.

The father knew his son was crazy about games, but he did not beat the boy.

“I said to him that I won’t prohibit him to play games, a pastime. But I asked him to learn hard and play hard,” Danh recalled the days when Khanh was a secondary school student. Khanh then cried and promised to try his best to get good marks.

The parents realized their son had a passion for learning physics when seeing the boy assemble and disassemble electronics parts. Khanh won first prize in physics at a district and then provincial competition when he was in the 9th grade.

Dinh Tran Phuong, the physics teacher of the school, noted that Nam had made a strong impression on him from the very beginning. “He is independent, self-disciplined, and has logical thought,” he noted.

When asked about the nickname “Number 1 rough paper saver”, Nam said he never leaves anything blank on his paper.

“I always try to write on any blank left. This allows me to review all the things I write,” he explained.
