Cultural Roundtable Discussion in Hanoi and HCM City
Fri 13 May Fri 20 May, 5.30 pm
Goethe Institute 56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Hanoi
The Delegation of European Union organises a roundtable discussion entitled “shared values of successful women in Vietnam’s modern society”, interacting Vietnamese and European perspectives. Participants include professionals in the field of culture and the arts, the media and general public.
Women play an important role in the family life and society. Women’ rights in the modern society are protected by the Law. In Vietnam, differently from the past, nowadays, Vietnamese women get degrees and succeed in a number of fields from business, arts, biology, education, etc. Many of them show their talents and ability and prove that they can do what they were not allowed.
However, the modern society also embraces hard views on the role of women. Single mothers are faced with suspicion, while the support towards them should be even stronger. Can women be free to choose their lives or choose the way they want to live, with or without a husband, with or without children, with or without bosses at work?
Bookworm Festival of Words 2011
Every week in May and June 2011, the Bookworm hosts an event featuring writers and words.
Bookworm, 44 Chau Long, Hanoi
This year the Bookworm decided that emerging and established writers and wordsmiths in Hanoi could do with a forum to present their words to the public.
Like the lotus in ponds around Tay Ho, the Bookworm Festival of Words is about to come into bloom. We hope that there will be a successful cross-pollination of ideas so that future festivals can easily germinate.
The inaugural festival will showcase the work of authors, bloggers, travel writers, poets, photographers, foodies, editors, songsters and those that use the unspoken word like artists and photographers.
Though this festival will be presented in English, we plan for a more inclusive program in the future.
The Bookworm has always been a non-profit Art Space and now becomes a non-profit Festival Space with participating writers nominating their favorite charity.
50 000VND per event (students – free entry) bookings advisable bookworm@fpt.vn
200 000VND season ticket available at BOOKWORM
All events are in English.
British band Goober Gun returns to Vietnam
Sat 14 May 2011, 9 pm
Hanoi Rock City, 27/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho, Hanoi
Returning to Hanoi by popular demand as part of their 2011 Asian Tour Part 2, this promises to be a smashing night of alternative pop rock. Support will be provided by Hanoi’s very own impressive alt rock act: Re-Cycle.
GOOBER GUN
Any stage, anywhere, any time, Goober Gun bring stadium sized songs and great harmonies together with a full on, utterly engaging and energetic live performance.
With influences such as Def Leppard, Cheap Trick, The Wildhearts and Jimmy Eat World, Goober Gun craft slabs of anthemic rock, combined with a lyrical and musical depth that has won over audiences around the UK and beyond.
The band’s live shows are all about impact; full of dancing, good times and soaring choruses. It’s this simple desire to entertain with style that has brought Goober Gun a superb fan and critical response, and on to win the BT Digital Music Search For Talent, as well as ‘Best Band’ at the Mag Awards.
They used to perform BIG shows in Hanoi and HCM City in 2010!
RE-CYCLE
Since 2007, Re-Cycle have been making a name for themselves as one of the leading alternative bands in Vietnam. Going from strength to strength on the big stage, Re-Cycle have lit up huge audiences at Rock Storm Hai Phong, (2010), Asean’s Best Band Finals in Malaysia (2010), and recently put on one of their best ever live shows at HRC’s Pulse (2011). Re-Cycle have two EPs already under their belt – Chilled (2008) and Recycling (2008), and a couple of popular singles including “Lời Hứa” and “Vượt qua”.
