The initiative is aimed at reducing traffic congestion, improving transportation infrastructure, boosting the city’s socio-economic growth and mitigating environmental pollution.
Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha chaired the second meeting of the task force assisting the Steering Committee on the progress of urban railway projects in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City this morning.
Hanoi has outlined a comprehensive plan to mobilize nearly $50 billion to construct a 600km urban railway system by 2045. To optimize investment and maintenance costs, the railway lines will adhere to consistent technical standards.
The Hanoi Metropolitan Railway Management Board (MRB) estimates that US$55.442 billion is needed in investment to complete the network of urban railway lines, contributing to reducing current urban traffic congestion.
Legal frameworks and innovative policy mechanisms are needed to develop urban railway systems based on the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) model in big cities.
The construction of the urban railway’s line will alleviate traffic congestion and air pollution while encouraging regional economic development.
