Deputy Prime Minister Phan Van Giang said Vietnam-US relations have developed strongly across multiple sectors in recent years.
He noted that parliamentary cooperation between the two countries has remained active through delegation exchanges, meetings between specialized committees, and cooperation in legislative experience-sharing, oversight and policymaking. According to him, these activities have contributed to strengthening mutual understanding and political trust while creating a favorable legal foundation for implementing bilateral agreements.
The Deputy Prime Minister also acknowledged the United States’ support for Vietnam in addressing war consequences, including dioxin remediation projects and assistance programs for disadvantaged and disabled people.
Giang expressed hope that US lawmakers would continue serving as practical bridges of friendship to further strengthen cooperation in economic and trade ties, education and training, defense industry cooperation, pilot training and English-language training for Vietnamese military personnel.
The US lawmakers said they were pleased to visit and work in Vietnam, where they were able to directly witness the country’s broad achievements in economic and social development and improvements in people’s living standards.
They said the visit aimed to help foster friendship and cooperative relations between the two countries and peoples. The lawmakers also affirmed they would continue making practical and effective contributions to promoting bilateral cooperation.
Building trust and addressing differences appropriately
Earlier the same day, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Doan Anh also met with the visiting US congressional delegation.
Nguyen Doan Anh noted that this was the first US congressional delegation to visit Vietnam in 2026 and that the presence of lawmakers from both the Democratic and Republican parties reflected the importance the US Congress places on Vietnam and the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The Vice Chairman praised the effective maintenance of exchange mechanisms between the two legislatures, including interactions among lawmakers, specialized committees and supporting agencies. He also expressed appreciation for cooperation programs provided by the US Congress to Vietnam’s National Assembly, including exchange initiatives organized by the US Congressional Office for International Leadership since 2022.
Reaffirming that Vietnam considers the United States one of its leading strategic partners, Nguyen Doan Anh called on both sides to further deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in a more substantive and practical manner.
He proposed expanding stable, balanced, fair and sustainable economic and trade cooperation, urging the US to soon recognize Vietnam’s market economy status. He also called for broader cooperation in science and technology, innovation, digital transformation, energy and strategic minerals, alongside continued collaboration in addressing war legacies and searching for missing military personnel.
The US lawmakers stressed that regular, frank and constructive dialogue between the two legislatures plays an important role in enhancing understanding, building trust and appropriately handling remaining differences, thereby contributing to the long-term stability and development of Vietnam-US relations.
They also expressed readiness to continue coordinating and supporting future visits by Vietnamese National Assembly delegations to the United States.
Discussing bilateral cooperation areas, the lawmakers described economic and trade ties as a key driver of the relationship. They acknowledged efforts by both sides to engage in dialogue and negotiations to resolve trade-related issues, including tariffs, in a balanced manner consistent with the broader bilateral framework.
