Attending the ceremony were representatives from the Board of Directors of Việt Nam Office for Seeking Missing Personnel (VNOSMP), were Mary Tarnowka, US Consul General in HCM City, Colonel Tuan Ton, Defence Attache of the US Embassy in Hà Nội, representatives of the Defence POW/MIA Accounting Agency and the US MiA Office in Hà Nội.
The Vietnamese side’s representative handed over two boxes of remains which were recovered by excavation teams during the 131st Joint Field Activities from May to July this year.
The remains were reviewed by Vietnamese and US forensic specialists in Đà Nẵng, who found they might be associated with US servicemen missing during the war in Việt Nam and recommended the remains be brought to Hawaii for further review.
Addressing the ceremony, the US government’s representative expressed deep gratitude for the steadfast humanitarian policy, goodwill and increasingly efficient co-operation of the Vietnamese Government and people.
The event was the 144th hand-over of American missing servicemen’s remains since 1973.
