A report by the vehicle registration authority indicated there are more than 120,000 vehicles whose registrations have run out. Of these, 80,000 are trucks and 40,000 are passenger cars. In 2014 alone, the registrations of 16,488 vehicles had expired, in addition to a large number of vehicles whose owners did not show up to renew their registrations.

The register suggested to the National Traffic Safety Committee to form a government task force to inspect vehicles in the provinces of Gia Lai and Thanh Hoa, as part of an inspection campaign to identify and fine vehicles with expired registrations.

"Provincial traffic safety committees and local transport departments will take charge of the campaign in their respective jurisdictions from May 10 to June 10 this year," Hinh said.
