As previously reported by VietNamNet, starting from September 16, 2024, telecom operators in Vietnam will no longer support subscriptions for 2G-only phones. Users will need to switch to devices that support 3G, 4G, or 5G networks.

In addition to typical “brick” phones that use 2G, luxury Vertu phones will also be affected by this transition. Nguyen Ngoc Ngan, CEO of Vertu Vietnam, stated that the company has ceased selling older Vertu models (which use 2G) and has shifted focus to newer models that support 4G, such as the Signature V. Many customers are opting to upgrade from the Signature S 2G model to these newer versions.

Currently, there are over 2,000 Vertu 2G phones in the Vietnamese market. To control unauthorized products, Vertu has permanently locked many such devices in Vietnam. Nevertheless, the market for second-hand Vertu 2G phones remains active, with these older models being sold in stores and online at significantly reduced prices.

V.T., a Vertu phone dealer in Hanoi, noted that many customers still choose to buy 2G Vertu phones, particularly the Signature S model, despite knowing that they will soon be unusable due to the 2G shutdown. Buyers are often driven by nostalgia and the significantly lower prices compared to the past. For instance, phones that once cost billions of VND are now available for around 200 million VND ($7,800), and those that were several hundred million VND are now priced at tens of millions of VND.

Nguyen Khanh Hoang, a high-end phone collector in Ho Chi Minh City, recently spent 150 million VND on a 2G Vertu phone that previously cost over 800 million VND (over $31,000). He bought it for his collection and sentimental value. Many enthusiasts are purchasing these older models as their prices have dropped significantly.

"Spending tens to hundreds of millions of VND to get a beautiful phone that looks like expensive, high-end jewelry is worth it," said Nguyen Khanh Hoang.

Nguyen Ngoc Ngan, CEO of Vertu Vietnam, acknowledged that despite tightened controls, the second-hand market for Vertu 2G phones remains active. Statistics show that in the past month, several hundred Signature S 2G phones were sold, with 80% in Hanoi, even as the 2G shutdown approaches.

In response, Vertu Vietnam announced an exclusive policy for the local market: customers using 2G Vertu phones, whether authorized or not, can visit Vertu stores for assessment and support to upgrade to 4G models.

Recently, many Vertu users have experienced weak or unstable signals, a problem that has become more frequent. Customers, including those with second-hand or unauthorized phones, have sought help from Vertu stores. They have been offered advice and support to upgrade to 4G models if needed.
