Tien was born in Hà Nội in 1937. He started his acting career in 1954 and impressed audiences with a number of comedy roles on the stage.

In 1961, he attended the acting course at the School of Dramatic Arts with many other famed artists like Thế Anh, Ngọc Hiền, and Cao Khương. After graduating, he worked at the Central Drama Troupe (now Vietnam Drama Theatre) until he retired in 2012.

Three of his daughters with artist Lê Mai are also famous artists and actresses - Lê Vân, Lê Khanh, and Lê Vi.

The acclaimed artist of Vietnamese theatre was renowned for many roles in many classic plays such as Đại Cát in Quẫn (Insanity), Đế Thích in Hồn Trương Ba, Da Hàng Thịt (Trương Ba's Soul, Butcher's Body), and Hoài Nghi in Chuông Đồng Hồ Điện Kremli (The Clock Bell of Kremlin Palace). He also starred in many films such as Thằng Bờm (The Stooge), Chuyện làng Nhô (Nhô Village’s Story) and Những Người Săn Lùng Cái Đẹp (Beauty Hunters).

Tiến not only succeeded in various leading roles but also in many others with distinctive personalities. He was also among few theatrical actors with a rare acting ability that earned success in the film industry. Through each of his roles, he conveyed his thoughts and concerns about life.

He had a famous saying: “Do your best in everything you do. In art, you have to be drunk, you have to be fascinated, you have to work hard, you have to put all your heart into the roles.” The artist who was passionate and committed to acting throughout his life was awarded the First Class Labor Medal by the State in 1997. VNS
