Born in 1940 in the northern province of Nam Dinh, Nhan graduated from the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography in Russia, before working at Viet Nam Feature Film Studio.

In 1975 he followed liberation military forces headed toward the south with cameraman Tran Khanh Du to make the documentary City in the Sunrise, which is the first colour documentary focusing on this historic time.

Nhan was one of the country's most prolific cameramen and his work includes gems of Vietnamese cinema including Toi loi Cuoi Cung (The Last Crime), Dem Hoi Long Tri (Long Tri Festive Night), Tuong Ve Huu (Retired General) and Dua Con Nuoi (The Adopted Child) which earned him three best cameraman prizes at the Viet Nam National Film Festival in 1977, 1980 and 1990.

Nhan's three children have been instilled with artistic passion from their father.

His death was caused by oral cancer which he was diagnosed with when he went to hospital for a diabetes test, his family said.

He was cremated yesterday, Sep 21.
