Gong who succeeded Park Hang-seo and led the Vietnam U23 side the 2022 AFC U23 Asian Cup quarterfinals was said to return to the RoK for a Pro coaching course.
The Korean expert signed a one-year contract in March 2022 with the VFF to lead the U23 side at the U23 Asian Cup and the Asian Games (ASIAD). However, ASIAD, which was originally scheduled to take place in September, was later cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak in China.
VFF Secretary General Le Hoai An revealed that Gong would return to Vietnam after he completes the training course in his home country.
“The VFF will then meet Gong to review the results of the Vietnam U23 side at the 2022 Asian Cup and work out future plans for the U23 team,” said An.
The VFF official also said Gong would observe professional tournaments and national youth tournaments to select hopefuls for Vietnam U23, to compete at the 32nd SEA Games and the Asian U23 qualifiers next year.
The U23 side are scheduled to fly home on June 14 after competing at the 2022 Asian Cup in Uzbekistan. Under Gong’s guidance, Vietnam cruised to the quarter-finals and bid farewell to the tournament after their 2-0 lose to Saudi Arabia on June 12.
