VietNamNet Bridge – The 67th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in the Great Patriotic War against fascism was celebrated on May 8 by the HCM City Union of Friendship Organizations, with the participation of the Russian Consul General and former Vietnamese students who studied in Russia.

Since the historical milestone more than six decades ago, the Victory over Fascism Day has become a popular festival for peace-loving nations around the world, including Vietnam.

The army and people of the Soviet Union combined their strength to destroy the Fascists’ ambition of world hegemony. The Soviet Red Army overcame severe hardships and made many sacrifices to win the landmark victory on May 9, 1945.

With this glorious victory, the Soviet people not only defended their national independence and freedom, but also paved the way for other countries to smash colonialism all over the world, including Indochina and Vietnam.

The same day, an exhibition about those who made victory over fascism opened at the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Museum and will last until May 17.

In his speech the opening ceremony, Russian Consul General Anatoli Vasilievich Borovik said, “We will forever keep our memories of the Vietnamese voluntary soldiers who laid down their lives in the fight to protect Moscow during the winter of 1941. Developing the mutually beneficial relationship between Russia and Vietnam is a priority of our external policy in the Asia Pacific region. We hope that the strategic bilateral partnership will grow and flourish in the future based on the foundation of time-honoured friendship and sincere sentiments between the two nations.”
