There are nearly 180 athletes competing in 20 classes of kyorugi (combat) event, while more than 100 will compete in nine poomsae (performance) disciplines.

Coach Nguyen Thanh Huy of Viet Nam said: “Looking at the recent world beach championship and taking lessons from the first edition of the championship, we have learnt that Viet Nam can definitely achieve their target.”

“This year, South Korea, the native country of taekwondo, is not taking part in the poomsae, so I believe that my athletes could grab more gold medals, especially in the poomsae’s standard style.”

“I am excitedly waiting for the tournament to start. I am working hard to prepare for my performance. I hope to get the highest result on home turf,” said Chau Ngoc Tuyet Sang.

According to coach Huy, 12-year-old Sang is one of Viet Nam’s gold medal hopes at the tournament, which will be open to fans free of cost at the Military Zone 7 Gymnasium till June 8.

In the first edition in Chinese Taipei in 2015, Viet Nam won one gold and two silver medals in the kyorugi and two gold, one silver and two bronze in the poomsae.
