VietNamNet Bridge – Viet Nam's infertility rate stands at eight per cent, and the infertility rate is equal in men and women, according to Nguyen Viet Tien, deputy health minister and director of the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The figures were revealed by the latest national research into the causes of infertility among men and women.

"Later births are one of the reasons for infertility in women," said Tien.

Previously, most women would have had their first child when they were in their twenties. Now many women marry later, and will often have their first child in their mid-thirties, he added.

Tien emphasised that older women suffer a greater risk of miscarriage.

At present, in addition to provincial reproductive support centres, Ha Noi and HCM City also host the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Tu Du Hospital.

About 30-35 per cent of infertility treatments are successful.
