The team palmed a silver medal at the World Sepak Takraw (rattan ball kicking) Championships in Kuala Lumpur last week after a 3-0 loss to archrivals Thailand in the final.

In order to freshen up, the team have recruited youngsters, including Lai Thi Huynh Trang, Dinh Thi Thuy Hanh and Nguyen Thi Dung, to substitute retired old stars.

"We need a young squad to maintain our competitive edge. On form players should be given the chance to hone their skills at world events," said team coach Hoang Huu Nghia.

Nguyen Xuan Hanh, general secretary of the Viet Nam Sepak Takraw Federation, said that the world event in Malaysia had been a crucial test for young players before the SEA Games kick off in November.

As scheduled, the team will undergo two training sessions in China and Thailand as well as take part in international tournaments in South Korea, Malaysia and Viet Nam.
