Teenagers wait to get Covid-19 vaccines

Speaking at a recent meeting on Covid-19 prevention, vice-head of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE), Duong Thi Hong, said that the rate would reach over 95 percent by the end of December 2021.

“We’ve basically achieved herd immunity against the virus," she said. "This has helped us reduce the number of fatalities and ease hospital overloading."

Explaining about the deaths of fully vaccinated patients, Hong said that most of them were elderly people who had some other diseases.

"Reports from major hospitals showed that most of the facilities come from groups who haven't vaccinated or are elderly people with underlying chronic medical conditions," the official said.

According to the Ministry of Health, Vietnam had administered between 1-1.5 million Covid-19 vaccine doses a day in November, ranking third globally after China and India.

The country has so far conducted over 138.77 million Covid-19 vaccine shots, with over 61.89 million people having received two doses.

Vietnam's vaccination coverage rate of at least one dose ranks fourth in Southeast Asia after Singapore, Cambodia, and Brunei.

Vietnam has started injecting the third doses for over a week now, with over 1.18 doses having been administered, including the third dose of the three-dose combo for Cuba's Abdala vaccine.
