Although Vietnam has not disclosed the names of athletes who will attend the 28th SEA Games in Singapore, sport leaders and national teams have set a target goal of bringing home 60-70 gold medals.
Vietnam will, however, miss a chance to bring home around 30 more golds for wrestling, weightlifting, karatedo, chess, and women’s football since the host, Singapore, has excluded these events from the competition.
Vietnam will send nearly 500 athletes to compete at 28 of 36 events with the hope to bring home around 60-70 golds.
Track and field is expected to win around 10-11 golds with renowned names like Quach Thi Lan, Quach Cong Lich, Nguyen Thanh Phuc, Nguyen Thanh Ngung, Tran Thi Hue Hoa, and Nguyen Van Hung.
It is also the first time in the history of the Vietnam sports that the swimming team has registered for the goal of 10 golds. Swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien is predicted to win 6-7 golds, while duo Hoang Quy Phuoc and Lam Quang Nhat are expected to bag 2-3 golds.
The gymnastic team set a goal of 8 golds as Phan Thi Ha Thanh who ranks first in Southeast Asia hopes to obtain at least 3-4 golds.
Three other teams - pencak silat, fencing and wushu – intend to win 6 golds while rowing, canoeing and taekwondo aim for 3-4 golds, shooting (4-5 golds), judo and petanque (3 golds each), archery, bike, boxing, billiard snooker, and sepaktakraw (2 each).
Other sporting events like badminton, tennis, volleyball, golf, bowling, etc. consider attending the regional tournament as a good chance to merely gain competition experience.
