Vietnamese Facebook users over-react to Miss Universe results

Many Vietnamese Facebook users have expressed their disappointment at the Miss Universe results.

The 64th Miss Universe crown was initially accidentally given to Miss Universe Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez Arévalo, before the organisers realised their mistake and awarded Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, a Filipino-German actress and model born in Stuttgart and raised in Cagayan de Oro who won the actual title.

The mix-up confused viewers and shocked and surprised Colombian and Filipino viewers.

Vietnam’s entrant Pham Huong failed to make the top 15.

Lots of Vietnamese Facebook users left rude comments on the Miss Universe fan page denouncing the results and leaving personal insults about the Filipino winner, combined with unrealistic expectations that the Vietnamese candidate had a chance to win the title.

"I can understand why Colombian people are disappointed of the result, but can’t agree with Vietnamese people’s reactions when their country’s representative failed. They must accept the reality,” Anj Aguilar, a Filipino Facebooker, commented.

Many more level-headed Vietnamese people left messages to congratulate the winner.

In contrast to the over-the-top reaction from some Vietnamese Facebook users, the Vietnamese beauty queen said she was neither upset nor disappointed by the result.

“So everything just had a gentle ending and I am always happy and proud of all my efforts," Huong said.
