Public Security Minister General Tran Dai Quang joined senior representatives from the United Nations and 72 countries responsible for national security to attend a conference held from June 24-25 in Russia's city of Ulan-Ude.
The meeting, which is the sixth such event, is held annually at the initiative of Russia in one of the country's cities. Russia was represented by Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev.
The meeting focused on several major topics: International interaction against increasing threats of neo global extremism and its new manifestations; Fresh water is a strategic resource for sustainable development and international security; International cooperation against the spread of the Ebola epidemic; Biosecurity and bioterrorism prevention; Russia's initiative to set up a system of international information security.
At the meeting, Minister Tran Dai Quang presented a report on strengthening international cooperation to combat terrorism and extremist activities.
The minister said Vietnam has promulgated legal documents on counter-terrorism and engaged in 12 out of the 16 UN treaties on counter-terrorism. As a member of the ASEAN Convention on Counter-Terrorism, the nation is actively considering joining the remaining international treaties against terrorism. Along with the strengthening of multilateral cooperation, Vietnam has also signed bilateral agreements with countries on judicial assistance in criminal matters, extradition and cooperation against crime, including international terrorists.
Minister Quang called on countries to further step up cooperation between law enforcement agencies to control and prevent illegal financing and Internet sites spreading terrorist ideology, extremism, closely cooperate in exit- entry management and handling of arising issues related to immigration, and ensure security for the foreigner community living in the territory of another.
He also underlined the need to build, supplement and fine-tune mechanisms for bilateral and multilateral cooperation on combating terrorism and extremist activities, share information and exchange experience regarding methods and tricks of terrorism and extremist activities.
In the framework of the conference, Quang also had a host of meetings with the leaders in charge of national security.
