Vietnamese students earned four gold, three silver and two bronze medals on December 17 at the ongoing 17th ASEAN University Games (AUG 17) in Palembang, Indonesia.
Among the gold medals, three came from track and field players Vu Thi Huong, Nguyen Van lai and Nguyen Thi Huyen in the women’s 200m track, the men’s 5,000m track and the women’s 400m hurdles, respectively.
The remaining was pocketed by Nguyen Anh Tu and Dao Duy Hoang in the men’s double of the table tennis.
Vietnam now ranks fourth in the medal tally with 17 golds, six silvers and two bronzes.
On December 18, Vietnamese athletes are scheduled to compete in the two last events of track and field, table tennis, and Pencak Silat.
The AUG is held every two years by the ASEAN countries in rotation. This year’s event features 20 sports with 225 sets of medals.
The 50-strong Vietnamese delegation competes in six sports, namely track and field, swimming, table-tennis, Taekwondo, Karate and chess.
At the previous games in Laos, Vietnam ranked second with 56 gold, 35 silver and 28 bronze medals.
