He received full ordination (Bhikkhu precepts) in 1951. Through decades of study and Dharma propagation, he became one of the most respected elders in Vietnamese Buddhism and was closely associated with the development of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha across many eras.
He served as head of the Trung Hau monastic sect, Dharma instructor at Vinh Nghiem ancestral temple, and was the founder of Linh Phong Meditation Garden in Vung Tau City (now part of Ho Chi Minh City). He also served as abbot of several prominent temples, including Linh Phong Meditation Temple, Bao An Temple, Bich Van Temple, Kim Son Bao Thang Temple, and Bao Hai Linh Thong Temple.
At the 8th National Congress of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in 2017, he was appointed Vice Patriarch of the Supreme Patriarch Council and held this position until his passing.
In recent years, due to declining health, he was respectfully invited by the Vinh Nghiem temple’s sangha to return to the temple (located at 339 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street, Ho Chi Minh City) for rest and medical care.
Despite his health challenges, he remained serene, gentle, and virtuous - a shining example for generations of monks, nuns, and lay followers.
According to Vinh Nghiem Pagoda, the ceremonial placement of his body into the golden coffin was held at 4:00 p.m. on October 8. The coffin was enshrined at Vinh Nghiem Pagoda.
The memorial ceremony will take place at 5:00 a.m. on October 12 (the 21st day of the 8th lunar month). Afterward, the remains will be escorted to Linh Phong Meditation Garden for enshrinement in a stupa.
Leaders of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha affirmed that the passing of Most Venerable Thich Tri Tinh is a profound loss for the Sangha, monks, nuns, and Buddhists nationwide.
His life and spiritual legacy are marked by immense virtue, wisdom, and compassion dedicated entirely to the Dharma and the nation.
The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha was officially established on November 7, 1981, in Hanoi. Its organizational structure is defined in its latest charter.
At the central level, the Sangha comprises the Supreme Patriarch Council and the Executive Council. The Supreme Patriarch is the highest spiritual leader - currently His Holiness Most Venerable Thich Tri Quang, the fourth Supreme Patriarch.
Under him are Vice Patriarchs and members of the Council. At the start of the 2022–2027 term, 11 senior monks were elevated to the position of Vice Patriarch. To date, three have passed away: Most Venerable Duong Nhon, Most Venerable Thich Hien Tu, and Most Venerable Thich Tri Tinh.
The Executive Council is headed by its President, currently Most Venerable Thich Thien Nhon.
At the provincial and municipal level, the Sangha operates through the Council of Elders and the Executive Committees in each locality.
